Insights from Vitality's Performance Manager Jack Birtwhistle

In an extensive interview, Jack Birtwhistle, Performance Manager at Team Vitality, delves into his role in maintaining player focus and enhancing team structure. With performance coaching now a recognized element in esports, Birtwhistle highlights how Vitality aims to adapt its approach as it strives for continued success.

Having previously worked in professional rugby for five years, Birtwhistle joined Vitality in late 2023, coinciding with one of the organization's most successful periods. Despite early triumphs, including a major title at the BLAST.tv Paris Major, Birtwhistle noted struggles in managing internal team dynamics, particularly with player Lotan "Spinx" Giladi.

"We probably got ahead of our skis a little and put the outcome before the process," Birtwhistle reflected, acknowledging that while the team consistently reached playoffs, internal conflicts hindered overall progress. He emphasized the complexity of communication in the team and how attempts to repair relationships with Spinx ultimately proved unfeasible due to his decision to leave.

Vitality's fortunes changed significantly after the arrival of Robin "ropz" Kool in January 2025. This shift saw the team embark on an outstanding 30-match winstreak and secure seven consecutive events, including the BLAST.tv Austin Major. Birtwhistle credited most of this success to the players, stating, "99% of the success comes from the players," and highlighted his role in creating minor enhancements or the "1% difference."

A concept Birtwhistle introduced, termed "theming," took inspiration from a Tom Brady documentary, aiming to instill a collective identity within the squad. Prior to 2025, Vitality faced challenges translating group stage dominance into playoff success, and the "Men in the Arena" theme served to shift the team's mindset.

He explained that success should not solely be measured by achievements but also by the process of striving towards improvement. The sentiment behind the theme was to build resilience and maintain focus amidst criticism that players face, acknowledging the emotional landscape of competitive gaming.

Birtwhistle also implemented a structured feedback system to monitor the team’s progress against its core values. This system, utilizing a simple traffic light evaluation, allows players to assess various aspects of their gameplay and cohesion, facilitating open dialogue during critical periods, such as pre-tournament preparations.

Despite early successes in the season, the team faced setbacks, including a notable loss to MOUZ that ended a remarkable series winstreak. Moving forward, Birtwhistle remains focused on continuously adapting their strategies as Vitality prepares for future competitions, aiming to uphold the steadfast spirit of growth and resilience that characterizes their journey.
