João "koala" Pfeffer, currently ranked as the 15th best prospect on HLTV, has navigated a unique path in the esports realm. Hailing from Tucuruí, a small municipality in Brazil's northern Pará state, koala has risen through the ranks despite the hurdles presented by his local infrastructure as well as a lack of support typical of urban gaming environments.

At just 21 years old, koala's journey has resonated with many fans, particularly as he broke into the top 10 earlier this year. His passion for gaming ignited during childhood visits to an internet cafe, though his early enthusiasm faced initial resistance from his mother. "I kept bugging her, asking her to let me play, to get me a computer," he recalled, indicating how significant the right support can be in pursuing a gaming career. It was only after persistent pleas that she gifted him a computer on his seventh birthday.

In those formative years, he began exploring the game solo, familiarizing himself with bots on cs_assault. His interest reignited during a family outing when he tried CS:GO for the first time, realizing it was unlike anything he had played before. This prompted him to obtain the game and fully commit to improving his skills.

Despite battling with high ping due to his geographic location, koala managed to adapt, often waiting late into the night to play CS when internet traffic eased. His dedication was evident, often logging between 100 and 200 matches a month, ultimately reaching the highest rank on the GamersClub platform. By the age of 14, after witnessing Luminosity's victory at the MLG Columbus Major, he decided to dedicate himself to Counter-Strike.

A pivotal moment came when koala moved to Minas Gerais, aimed at improving his education while positioning himself closer to São Paulo, the hub of esports in Brazil. This relocation allowed him to fully immerse himself in gaming just as the COVID pandemic struck. Despite his mother’s initial concerns, she eventually supported him, recognizing his commitment to a professional gaming career.

His official matches began in 2021, with his first notable team being Ceará, followed by a brief stint at Elevate. His major breakthrough occurred when he joined FURIA Academy, where he competed in European leagues and helped solidify his aspirations despite facing challenges. Although he experienced a tough time in terms of gameplay ratings, he appreciated the opportunity to grow as a player within a competitive environment.

Currently playing with Sharks (formerly DENDELE), koala has found a niche that suits his playstyle. Identified primarily as an Anchor/Lurker, he enjoys the strategic depth that these roles provide. Drawing inspiration from various players across the globe, he emphasizes the importance of understanding utility usage over merely aiming to get kills.

Through his journey, koala has achieved success in Brazil with five LAN victories and multiple top finishes in various tournaments, showcasing his potential as a future star in Counter-Strike.
